working under fiat technical director carlo cavalli, giulio cesare cappa was responsible for the design of the 509. Built on a 100-in. Wheelbase, it was equipped with a one-litre overhead-cam four-cylinder engine. The 509 could reach 50 mph and competed for public favor with other contemporary small cars like the 6cv renault, c-type citroen and austin seven. Body types included a pininfarina-designed two-door sedan, weymann fabric sedan, coupe, coupe royal, tourer and even a van and baby taxicab.
