the 250 gt was a real racing car that the public could buy and use on the road. In just under four years, 84 tdf berlinettas were built, though not all were destined to be used in competition. Originally designed by gioacchino colombo and revised by aurelio lampredi, the 3-litre v12 engine displaced 250 ccper cylinder, which accounted for the cars 250 designation.
built for lightness
because of their competition potential, the 250 gt berlinettas were constructed of lightweight materials, with aluminum coachwork and plastic side windows. Though the original berlinettas were built by pinin farina, most post-1956 versions were constructed by scaglietti, who possessed greater experience working with aluminum; Some post-1956 cars were bodied by
zagato. The 1956 version had a large radiator grille and rounded rear wings, whereas the 1957 model had a long nose and tailfins.the softly curved bodies of the berlinettas for 1959 heralded the i960 swb version. A 1959 250 gt berlinetta no. 1321 finished first in its class and third overall in that years 24 hours ofle mans. |
