| | About vehicle Long hood, wide rear
built on a 110-in. Wheelbase, the challenger was 193 in. Long, with a wide rear track of nearly 6l in. It had a low profile, long hood and short rear deck, full-width recessed grille, coke-bottle-shaped sides, large raised rear fenders and rectangular taillights. In addition to the standard hardtop there was a luxury special edition (se) one with a padded vinyl roof, smaller rear window and special external ornamentation and interior appointments. The standard challenger engines were a six-cylinder and v8.
rt performance package
of the 83,032 challengers produced for 1970, 19,938 were rts with heavy-duty suspension and brakes, rear bumblebee or side stripes and fiberglass-belted black sidewall tires with raised white letters. Many came in high-impact colors like plum, lime or mango. The standard engine was a 383-cu.-in., 35ohp v8, and optional ones
ranged up to a 440 magnum six-pak or 426 hemi v8. But the muscle-car era had already peaked. The challenger was withdrawn after 1974, although dodge later gave the name to an imported japanese model. Dodge joined the muscle-car sweepstakes for 1970 by introducing the challenger rt, a hardtop coupe or convertible with a big v8 engine. |
