the laser xe also had frontwheel drive and. An optional turbocharger for the four-cylinder engine that in effect turned the vehicle into a sports car. The aerodynamic design featured a front air dam and rear spoiler. The turbocharged xes had hood louvers to release heat. The drivers seat included airfilled bladders for thigh and back support. And a special optional handling suspension included higher-rate coil springs and gas-filled shock absorbers in front as well as in the rear.

sad to say, despite these features and a reasonable price, the xe failed to survive, nor did the laser base model introduced with it. Although a bigger engine became standard for
1986 and an xt model actually an optional performance package for the xe was added, the lasers did not make it into the 1987 lineup. The laser xe, a hatchback coupe packed with electronic displays, joined the chrysler lineup for 1984. |
