| | About vehicle Changed for the worse
in the meantime, loewys original design had undergone a number of revisions; The purity if the original concept was little more than a fading memory. For better or worse, studebaker had followed the american philosophy of annual model changes. But the firm was strapped for cash, and body changes were limited to extra chrome and the addition of tailfins.
mechanical improvements
the financial crunch at studebaker was a pity. For the hawks chassis and powertrain had been improved significantly. The odd result was that the 1957 version of the coupe was uglier but more mechanically advanced than the 53 model. Many of the cars in the hawk line were equipped with the excellent studebaker valve-
in-head v8 introduced in 1951; Some cars still carried the old flathead six, whose design dated to the beginning of the twenties. The 1957 studebaker silver hawk began as an adventurous design but gradually succumbed to the dictates of fortune, although its engine was steadily improved. |
