ferdinand porsche worked at steyr in 1920 and rejoined the company as chief engineer in 1929. He designed a 2.1-litre six-cylinder model that became the basis of steyrs principal models of the 1930s. In 1936 steyr presented the 120, which benefited from a new chassis with independent front suspension. The engine was moved farther in front, and the radiator received an inclined grille. For the successor 220, the engine was expanded to almost 2.3 litres. All-wheel independent suspension was adopted, with swing axles.
ties with jensen
steyr automobiles were widely sold and appreciated in central europe but were not known elsewhere. In order to enlarge its clientele, links were established in great britain
with jensen, which displayed a steyr-engined prototype at the 1938 london motor show. Plans for further collaboration were cut short by nazi germanys annexation of austria in 1938. The steyr 220 convertible was an austrian luxury car with a 2.3-litre engine and independent suspension. |
