| | About vehicle All-new model
a pressed-steel monocoque sedan, the r12 gordini was actually an all-new car. The 1.6-litre engine was developed from the renault 16 rather than from the r8 gordini or renault 12 1.3-litre and had a higher compression ratio. Instead of the hemispheric cylinder head and slant valves of the r8 gordini engine, this one had a flat cylinder head and parallel valves. Unlike its predecessor, the r12 had frontwheel drive. In a departure for renault in layout, the engine was ahead of the final-drive unit and the new five-speed transmission.
heavy and clumsy
these changes were not beneficial despite the added power that took the new car to a claimed top speed of 115 mph. The r12 was much heavier and less maneuverable than its predecessor. Hampered by front-wheel drive and
a drive axle that didnt grip well, it didnt hold the road acceptably for racing purposes, and renaults competition team scrapped the model The renault r12 gordini was no substitute in the eyes of french car buffs for the legendary r8 gordini. |
