| | About vehicle Big success
the dauphine was as big a success as its predecessor over two million were built in ten years. Renault even tried to launch the dauphine in america, where, despite a ready-acceptance at its introduction, it failed to sell, the victim of a nonexistent dealer network.
improved performance
the dauphine exhibited improved performance, but certainly not universal improvements over the old 4cv: The swing-axle suspension and the overhung mounting of the rear engine gave it more unpredictable roadholding than the lower-slung and slower 4cv. Moreover, the dauphine was far more prone to rust and disappeared from the roads far more quickly than the indestructible
4cv. Some of the dauphines produced during the models run had ferlec electromagnetically operated clutches, activated by a switch on the gear knob. The dauphine used a more highly tuned version of the old 4cv running gear on a new, italian-designed body. |
