| | About vehicle Anohvv8
this custom safari had the same chassis as the low-end chieftain station wagon, which meant a 122-in. Wheelbase 7 in. Longer than the nomads but 2 in. Shorter than other star chief models. Like other pontiacs, its overhead-valve v8 engine grew larger and more powerful each year, reaching 290 hp in 1957. The optional fuel-injected bonneville v8, equipped with three two-barrel carburetors, boosted that to 317 hp.
hardtop-wagon styling mix
the safari interior had cargo-deck carpeting and cloth-and-leather upholstery, with all-leather an option. Like other pontiacs, it had a wraparound windshield. The grille became all-chrome for 1956 and came in electric-shaver style for 1957, when tailfins and missile-like side trim were adopted. In that year, the last for this model, the
safari name came to be used by all pontiac station wagons. Production of the safari totaled only 8,410 in three years, primarily because of its high price and the fact that it was not as practical as a full wagon. This 1956pontiac custom safari was an interesting mix of station wagon and hardtop styling. It was based on the chevrolet nomad, but it was larger, more luxurious and more expensive. About 4,000 safaris were sold in 1956, the wagons best year. |
