Standard upgrades
dual exhausts, pile carpeting and carpeted lower-door panels were standard on the grand prix. The 1971 edition received single instead of dual headlights, a bumper running across the grille and a semi-boattail rear. Front disc brakes, power steering and brakes and automatic transmission became standard during the model year. For 1972 the car was given a new crosshatched grille.
performance plus
the sj performance option contained badges, larger tires and bigger v8 engines, which for 1970-72 was 455-cu.-in. More cosmetic aspects of this package included outside mirrors in the body color, vinyl pinstripes, luggage and door courtesy lamps and a rally gage cluster. With a
new emphasis on safety and reducing fuel emissions, however, even the 455 engine dropped to 250 hp in 1972.
