to qualify for nascar races, chrysler had to offer the hemi in a production car. Of the 504 hemis sold in 1966 plymouths, 50 were racers and 454 were street hemis a reined-in variant with cast-iron instead of aluminum cylinder heads and carter four-barrel carburetors instead of racing holleys. Four-speed manual transmission, heavy-duty suspension and oversized drum brakes came with the hemi to deal with the hairy roadholding and braking.

the 1966 belvedere series, which included a belvedere satellite hardtop coupe and convertible, emerged with a squarish body after major restyling and a choice of six-cylinder and v8 engines. For 1967 a new high-performance
gtx hardtop coupe and convertible also had the hemi option. This special-order 1967plymouth belvedere came with the street hemi engine. Of the 75 made, some are still winning drag races. |
