designer philip wright, under the direction of vice-president roy faulkner, created a $10,000, twelve-cylinder supercar, called the silver arrow, that broke all the rules of body design and created most of the rules of body design we live by today. The body, built by studebaker and placed over a pierce 139-inch chassis, looked like a 14-foot comet, with a raked, v-shaped grille that broadened to a huge hood and then began a gradual decrescendo all the way to its pointed tail. Under the aerodynamic body lurked two hidden spare tires and a 462-cubic inch, seven-bearing monster, capable of 175 hp and 115 mph.
double dash
swinging open the silver arrows thick doors on their concealed hinges revealed the interior luxury pierce arrow was known for. Sumptuous upholstery and fittings included a duplicate
dashboard in the rear for the benefit of backseat occupants and highly polished maple throughout the cabin. The silver arrow was a show car; Only five were made, four of which have survive to the present. Heralded as one of the most startling and streamlined automobiles ever built, the silver arrow was introduced in 1933: In new york and in chicago at the worlds fair. |
