| In 1955 the ford motor company, following the example of general motors, split lincoln-mercury in an effort to respond better to consumer demand in the medium-priced automobile market. Under jack reith, the head of the new mercury division, the marque proceeded to grab a larger chunk of the domestic market with its monterey, montclair and custom series. That year, the custom series consisted of a two-door hardtop coupe, two- and four-door sedans and a station wagon. | Specifications performance

The big m
for 1956, mercury added a big m to the hoods of all models and a convertible to its custom line. This ragtop didnt sell very well it accounted for only 2,300 of the 85,000 customs sold that year but its elegant lines, and the fact that it was a one-year-only model, has aroused some collector interest. The car, like other customs, had lightning-bolt-shaped full-length bodyside trim, as well as the chrome window trim that distinguished it from the medalist.

mercury offered the m-260 package which included two four-barrel carburetors and a boost to 360 hp.
The 1956 mercury custom convertible saw only one year of production and that year also brought a halt to the entire customs series. |
