Mercury Comet Cyclone Gt - 1966-1967 |

V8 engine, the mercury comet cyclone gt was generally left in the dust by muscle-car rivals like the pontiac gto, dodge coronet, plymouth belvedere and chevrolet chevelle ss-396. As a result, it sold poorly despite its appearance, in candy-apple-red convertible form, as the official pace car of the 1966 indianapolis 500. | Specifications performance Top speed of 115 mph

| | About vehicle Fiberglass hood
like other comets, the 1966 cyclones grew from compact to intermediate size, but they received their own distinctive horizontal grille and had nonfunctional air scoops on the fiberglass hood. All had bucket seats and chromed wheels, but only the gt models a convertible and hardtop coupe had the four-barrel holley-carburetor 390 engine. The gts also came with dual exhausts, heavy-duty suspension, wide-oval tires and a front anti-sway bar for hard cornering. Also included were nonfunctioning airscoops on the fiberglass hood. Production came to 15,790.
swan song
the following year, the comets adopted a different grille. Power disc brakes became standard for the gts, and a number of safety features were added, including a padded steering
wheel and dual braking system. But only 3,797 were produced. A redesigned grille distinguished this 1967 mercury comet cyclone gt hardtop from the 1966 model. |
