| | About vehicle Compact to intermediate
every bit as hot as it looks! was how mercury advertised the first caliente, which had a wide full-length side body molding. The horizontally stacked quad headlights became vertical for 1965. The following year all comets grew in length by 8 in. And became classified as intermediates. The bodyside molding was replaced by a midline crease. The 1967 caliente had full-length pin stripes on the upper body. Sales sagged badly, however, and the series was discontinued.
six or eight cylinders
the standard caliente engine was a straight six-cylinder, but a variety of v8s were available. A team of 1964 comet calientes, powered by four-barrel-carburetor 289-cu.-in., 271hp v8s, racked up more than 100,000 miles at average speeds of
over 100 mph. This hot car became even hotter for 1966 with the introduction of 390-cu.-in. V8 engines. The 1965 mercury comet caliente repeated 1%4s wide side body moulding, but the headlights in the restyled grille were stacked vertically this time. |
