They called the mercer the car of caliber. It was the finest american sporting car of the pre-1920 era. The marques financial backing came from the roebling family the wealthy builders of the brooklyn bridge and its name from mercer county, new jersey, where the automobiles trenton factoiy was located. The marque made its debut in 1910, the same year the model 30 c speedster was launched.

Isnt she lovely young washington roebling went racing with a stripped version of the speedster known as a raceabout, and it was this model that was developed during 1911 into the famed 35j raceabout by mercers gifted chief engineer, finlay robertson porter. Its lithe lines carrried no surplus weight, and the cars roadholding ability was in a class of its own. The throttle pedal was mounted on the outside of the cowl. songbird some mercer owners improved the spartan wind protection with a monocle windshield clamped to the steering column. The favorite color for what little bodywork mercer made available was a bright canary yellow. In 1912, washington roebling went down with the titanic, but the 35j mercer raceabout outlived him by three years. It remains highly sought after today.
A direct ancestor of the immortal 35f raceabout was the 1910 mercer 30 c speedster, powered by a beaver engine and capable ofcmising at a speed of 60 mph.
