| | About vehicle The knight sleeve-valve engine
in 1910 paul daimler had bought rights to produce the sleeve-valve engine invented by charles yale knight. This innovative engine had grooved sleeves instead of valves. Its principal advantage was unrivaled silence and smoothness of function. In addition, the knight engine performed better than a larger one with valves, even at lower rpm. Against this, however, were great disadvantages: The knight engine was more expensive to make, its response was feeble, the sleeves were liable to leak, and the engines rpm could not at this time surpass 1,800.
chauffeur-operated model
three mercedes-knight models went into production in the year following the wars end: The prewar 1030 and the new 1645 and 2865. Because the 1645 was difficult to operate, a chauffeur had to drive it. Nevertheless, thanks to its high quality and incontestable elegance, this four-seat model was popular, with its production reaching 5,350. Equipped with a knight sleeve-valve engine, this mercedes 1645 ps phaeton dates from 1921. |
