| | About vehicle Dominant in 1938
the new car was largely the work of rudolf uhlenhaut, whose auto union racers of 1934-35 had humiliated mercedes. The chassis was the same as the one used in the w125, with a twin-tube frame, redesigned front suspension and a de dion rear axle instead of the earlier swing axle. The transversely mounted engine was angled in the frame and tilted downward, while the body was so low that at no point was it higher than the top of the rear wheels. W154s were victorious in six races, including the french, german and swiss grand prix and the tripoli event, in which the mercedes cars took the first three places.
more powerful in 1939
for 1939 this car, now known as the w154163 or just the w163, had the same chassis, but new was a two-stage supercharger in which a small
blower fed a larger one, with the engine receiving the total boost from both. Mercedes again dominated grand prix competition in this last season before world war ii. The 1939 cars raced again in argentina during 1952. Mercedes dominated grand prix racing in 1938 and 1939. Shown here is the 1939 model, which was called the w154163 or just the w163 |
