In 1900, emil jellinek (consul-general for austria in nice. France, and agent for the german daimler company) signed a contract for the first 30 cars of a revolutionary new design provided they were named after his teenaged daughter, mercedes. The cars were aimed at seducing through their performance the sporting appetites of rich britons, then daimlers principal, and valued, clientele.

Mighty engines in those days, extra speed was gained by increasing engine size, and wealthy clients were willing to pay the price for such extravagance. In 1903, daimlers brilliant chief engineer, wilhelm maybach, unveiled his masterpiece, the 60hp mercedes, with an engine of 9.25 liters. It was dazzlingly fast and difficult to master, requiring a driver of considerable physical strength and dexterity; Amateur racer count zborowski was killed when his starched shirt cuffs caught the hand throttle and jammed it open. gordon bennett! in i.903, the daimler factory burned down, destroying the team of race cars built for the gordon bennett trophy, the main race of the season. Wealthy owners lent their new mercedes 60s back to the factory and one of these cars, driven by camille red devil jenatzy, wron the gordon bennett that year on a figure-eight racing course in ireland.
This 1904 mercedes has a sidevalve 9j36cc engine, one of a hatch specially built for the american market.
