| | About vehicle Not ready for prime time
these cars were not the first fourwheel-drive one-seat racers. Bugatti made one in the 1930s, stirling moss won a i960 formula one race aboard a ferguson, and novi, lotus and lola later entered fourwheel-drive cars in the indianapolis 500. But for a number of reasons, including too much weight and steering problems, they could never match conventional racers under normal conditions.
turned-around engine
designed by jo marquart, the m9a was an aluminum-alloy monocoque over a tubular subframe and steel bulkheads. Its ford-cosworth v8 engine was turned back to front, driving forward to a mclaren-designed transmission just behind the drivers seat. Driveshafts along the left side of the car led to front and rear limited-
slip differentials with antispin locks. The torque-split ratios of the central differential could be changed very quickly. This fourwheel-drive mclaren m9a, driven by derek bell failed to finish the british grand prix, the only race in which it was entered. |
