About vehicle
Surprisingly conventional wilhelm maybach had been the partner of automotive pioneer gottlieb daimler and later the builder of airship engines for graf zeppelin before he took to making expensive cars with his son karl. On a wheelbase of 147 in. And with a length of 216 in., the ds8 zeppelin was his flagship. Despite the huge eight-litre engine, it was conventional in mechanics except for the transmission, which had eight forward and four reverse gears. After selecting a gear the driver automatically engaged it by lifting his foot from the throttle. not for the vulgar * one of the worlds most expensive cars, the zeppelin was sold to wealthy germans who regarded mercedes models as too flashy. Conversely, it was never a favorite of nazi regime officials (whom the maybach clientele undoubtedly considered vulgar parvenues). about 215 were built, all with custom-made bodies and most of them conservatively styled.
At about four tons, the maybach ds8 was one of the worlds heaviest and most expensive cars.
