| | About vehicle Formula one engine
the vi2 power unit was virtually identical to those of the firms formula one one-seaters, wrhich were built to the same three-litre displacement limit. In variation, the 670 engine was detuned, with a lower revving limit. The 670 was easily recognizable by its 13-inch (instead of 15-inch) front wheels, which gave it a nose-down design that aided high-speed stability. The 670 also had a larger cockpit to meet new dimensional regulations and requirements for the sport prototype category.
le mans-meister
the primary aim of matra was obviously a victory at le mans. The three ms 670s took part in the 24-hour race over june 10 and 11 in 1972. Competition was lessened by the withdrawal of
ferrari and mirage-ford, though the race didnt amount to a walkover for matra. The victory of the ms 670 was well-deserved it was the first le mans win for a french car since 1950. Driven by graham hill and henri pescarolo, the matra 670 gave france its first victory at the sarthe classic in 22 years. |
