| | About vehicle Grand prix racers
this maserati had a box-section chassis and an eight-cylinder engine. There were two overhead camshafts and two superchargers, one above the other. Two cars were built and entered in 1938 competition. Very fast, the 8 ctf took the lead in the tripoli grand prix and the ciano and acerbo cup races but in each case had to retire with engine trouble. The 8 ctf finished fifth in the
1938 italian grand prix and third in the 1939
german gp.
indianapolis 500 winner
a third 8 ctf was built for mike boyle, who called it a boyle special and hired wilbur shaw to drive it in the indianapolis 500. Shaw won the
1939 and 1940 events and was leading in 1941
with only 49 of the 200 laps left when a wheel
collapsed and the car hit the wall. When racing
resumed after world war ii, the boyle was third
in 1946, third in 1947 and fourth in 1948 at indy. Another 8 ctf was fourth in the 500 event in 1948, and one of these maserati cars raced as late as 1953. Shown here in grand prix racing red, the maserati 8 ctf reached its potential when one of the three cars won consecutive indianapolis 500 events. |
