| | About vehicle Completely new
the multitubular-frame march 702 did not fare well in 1970, so gordon coppuck designed the all-new 712m monocoque. Some f2 racing cars had wheelbases of 102 in. Or more, but the 712ms was only 82 in. In the first f2 race of the 1971 season, at hockenheim, germany, the car prepared by the official works team, smog racing (named for a throat lozenge), and driven by ronnie peterson was victorious.
by far the best
the 712m had to be a good car because it either won or placed high for five other racing stables besides smog: Hart, novamotor, racing engines services, lucas and brambilla. Some of the 712ms were equipped with a bmw engine, but smog and others used a ford-cosworth four-cylinder. The cars popularity was such that as many as 13 were raced during the season.
peterson won the f2 drivers championship, and another march 712m driver finished third. Ronnie peterson won the 1971 formula two drivers championship at the controls of the all-new march 712m prepared by smog racing |
