| | About vehicle Short, wide breadvan
the lotus europa was one of the worlds first midengined production cars, with the engine just-ahead of the rear wheels and the transmission just behind them. One seat was on either side of the backbone frame. The short, wide body was characterized by a low nose, recessed headlights, and high rear sail panels that won the car the nickname of breadvan. the improved 1968 version had power windows and a little more interior space. The body was bolted to the chassis instead of bonded to it, thereby making repairs easier.
great roadholding
lotus founder colin chapman wanted the renault transaxle, but to get it he also had to
buy the underpowered renault 16 four-cylinder engine. American motorists got a slightly larger version of that engine. The europas excellent balance and power-to-weight ratio offered great sports handling. It could be bought in kit form as well as factory-built. Because of its high rear panels, required because the engine came up so high, the lotus europa was dubbed the breadvan. |
