a light, simple racer, the lotus 18 had a steel multitubular spaceframe chassis and an aluminum body in what was called a coffin-on-wheels shape an expression tragically confirmed when a team lotus driver was killed in the belgian grand prix. The 18 was run in i960 with a climax four-cylinder 2.5-litre engine in formula one competition and 1.5-litre engine in formula two. Twenty-six cars were built.
moss to the rescue
a team lotus car driven by innes ireland won three fl races, but all were non-championship events. After ireland had defeated moss, driving a cooper, in both an fl and f2 race on the same day, moss switched to a lotus 18. A week later he won the monaco gp, and he also won the u.s. Gp at the end of the season. For 1961, fl engine size was limited to 1.5 litres, and the
updated car became the 1821 with the sleek body panels and some other features of the new lotus 21. Moss outclassed more powerful ferraris to win the monaco and german grand prix in an
