| | About vehicle Racing roots
most people know the stratos for its race face. But rally cars, in order to be certified for racing, have to have a production run, too. Like many cars on the rally circuit, the stratos was designed as a race car that could also play in the streets.
the winning edge
with a 190hp ferrari dino v6 engine fed by three weber carburetors mounted in the middle of a featherlight, 2,l6l-lb., wedge-shaped body, the stratos could really move. But it was a braking dynamo, too: Massive 10.7-inch front and 10.9-inch rear disc brakes kept the speeding bullet under control, a necessity on the treacherous cutbacks of rally racing. Inside both the street and racing versions, the cockpit was uncluttered. Made for driveability, one driver described a spin in the stratos as riding in a really fast helmet. in the mid-seventies, the stratos put its strengths to work, dominating the
rally circuit with major titles every year beginning in 1974 and ending in 1979- With a body by bertone and a six-cylinder engine borrowed from the ferrari dino, the lancia stratos distinguished itself as one of the mid-seventies most . Successful rally cars. |
