| | About vehicle Development problems
the gammas problems began at its very inception. Fiat, which owned lancia, expected to acquire citroen, so the gamma was to have many parts in common with the citroen cx. When the deal fell through, final development, now generally along the lines of the lancia beta, was rushed. The gammas new four-cylinder engine, which had horizontally opposed pistons and hemispherical combustion chambers, was rough and plagued at first by mechanical problems.
1980 facelift
the fl (for facelifted) update of the coupe introduced in 1980 had more readable dashboard instruments, a new radiator grille and fuel injection for the 2.5-litre engine to make it quieter, smoother and more fuel-efficient. (the gammas sold in italy had two-litre engines to
reduce the tax bite.) the frontwheel-drive gamma coupe (and sedan) handled, cornered and braked extremely well but could not live down unfavorable first impressions. Spare and elegant, the lancia gamma coupe was one of pininfarinas best style statements. |
