frederick lanchesters 1910 invention of the torsion vibration damper made practical the 38hps big six-cylinder engine. This, and the companion 25hp four-cylinder model, were the first lanchesters with wheel rather than tiller steeling and a foot-operated clutch in place of a hand lever. This lanchester had a short hood; Previous ones had no hood at all, with the radiator perpendicular to the windshield and the driver on one side of the engine. The 38hp retained the planetary transmission and cantilever springs of previous models. It had a pressed-steel chassis-frame design, and the long 135-in. Wheelbase assured comfort.
