| | About vehicle Formula two engine
because the lada engine did not generate sufficient power, the 1987 niva received a simca-derived roc. This twin-cam four-cylinder engine originally was used in two-litre formula two competition and had since been expanded to 2.5 litres. With bosch fuel injection it delivered 280 hp at 8,000 rpm, but this engine rev would be impossible to sustain over the grueling 8,000-mile course, most of it running through the sahara.
not rugged enough
the nivas adapted and reinforced body was made lighter by the use of titanium and kevlar carbon fibers. Even so, this vehicle was not up to the standard of such formidable entrants as the peugeot 205t16, range rover and mitsubishi pajero. The nivas best showing was fourth place
in one of the legs of the race. Eventually, the engine, as expected, gave up the ghost. In spite of the indisputable talent of driven like jackie ickx, the lada niva was too fragile to finish the 8,000-mile, three-week-long paris-dakar event. |
