Jaguars racing type d had bristled with the detailing of a muscular racing machine, and the technology under the hood made it a pure racing animal. When jaguars president, william lyons, decided to bring the excitement of the type d to more than just the worlds racing elite, he beefed up the type e.

Mass-produced thrills introduced in 1961 at a relatively modest price of $4,200, the xke, as it came to be known, incorporated several of the technological advances found in the type d. Lyons mass-produced the racing components and made them affordable. under the hood the xke was distinguished not only by the handsome dohc . With a body style known as the monocoque, lyons and body designer malcom sayer integrated the body and frame, deriving strength from the cars shell and lightness from the lack of steel needed to support it. The type e was as sleek, powerful and quiet as the animal for which it was named. Production of the e series at jaguars factory in coventry ceased on february 12, 1975.
A type e coupe 2 + 2 could easily bring over $80,000 today. The type e was also available in a roadster version or hardtop,
