| Jaguar revved up a lot of controversy when it decided to produce a twelve-cylinder engine for a new series that included both a 2+2 convertible coupe and a roadster with a removable hard top. A jag with electronic ignition and four carburetors seemed almost sacrilegious to long-time fans. Worth its weight
the contrast with the magnificent old twin-cam six-cylinder jags couldnt have been more striking. The single-overhead-cam vi2 that bill heynes and claude baily designed in the seventies after almost a decade of experimenting was based on modern design techniques that allowed them to reduce the weight. In a concession to the american market, however, the type e was classified as a roadster, because the word carried a distinctly british ring.

looking like a dachshund and performing like a greyhound, the type e quickly won over jags perennial audience and earned new fans. An old
dog with a new trick, it proved that twelve cylinders could be as popular as a puppy.
