rear-wheel skirts and thinner windshield pillars added to the budget bentley image. Indeed, the mk v designation seems to have been chosen simply because bentley had recently launched its own mk vi. The chassis of the jaguar was entirely new, heralding an era of jaguars with independent front suspension that provided smoothness and handling considered outstanding by journalists of the day.
all-new chassis
in fact, the chassis was a preview of the engineering of the mk vii, which later reappeared in 1951, powered by a new twin-cam engine (only one experimental mk v was built with the new power plant). Another improvement was the hydraulic braking system.
some 10,000 mk v jaguars 1,000 of them with three-position dropheads were produced in three years. The styling of the jaguar mk v deliberately mimicked that of the bentley mk vi. Thefaired-in headlights, however, were a modern touch. |
