It was 1930, the first full year of the great depression and national auto sales were down considerably. But the american public loved the smoothness of the new straight eight-cylinder cars coming out of detroit, and hudson entered the race for customers with the great eight.

Engine innovation mounted on rubber blocks to reduce vibration, hudsons 213.cs-cubic-inch, 80hp l-head powerplant used the heated exhaust manifold to preheat the air going to its eight cylinders making combustion smoother and more consistent. The great eight also had an innovative valveless oil pump, which greatly improved lubrication and extended the life of the engine. Though no more powerful than the 1929 hudson super-six that had preceded it, the great eight bodies were reduced from 1425 to 875 pounds, improving the cars overall performance. choices, choices hudson offered a standard sedan, touring sedan, sunsedan, coupe, 7-passenger phaeton, and brougham, each with a choice of chassis length. The body types were interesting and refined, some with chromed spare covers and elegant grill detailing.with eleven models and a variety of chassis to choose from, the great eight offered something for everyone.
The hudson great eight was loaded with accessories. This 1930 seven-passenger phaeton model included a custom chrome grill over the radiator, marked with the hudson insignia.
