| | About vehicle V12 engine
hondas transversely mounted vi2 motor was based on its motorcycle engines, but the cooper chassis the company bought was too narrow to hold the engine. After that debacle, honda engineers built a brabham-based chassis, with a monocoque central section and a tubular subframe carrying the engine and the rear suspension. Ronnie bucknum, an american, drove the car in three 1964 races.
fuel-injected high
for 1965, the engine was a little more powerful, the car was 60 lbs. Lighter and a second driver, richie ginther, was hired to drive a second ra272. Both cars did well in qualifying runs, only to fail in the race because of mechanical problems. The best results were sixth places by ginther in the belgian and dutch gps before he won the last 1965 event in mexico. Bucknum was fifth. This success was attributed to fuel
injection, which proved decisive at the high altitude of the track. It was the last race for the ra272 because new formula one rules ended the 1.5-litre engine-size restriction Hondas first racing car, the ra272, competed on the formula one circuit during 1964 and 1965. |
