Gordini 26s  cigar  - 1953-1956

Amedee gordini was called the magician because of his ability to conjure up racing cars from odd-lot materials. He started out racing and tuning sports cars and began making slender single-seat formula cars in 1947, building the first ones around simca-fiat components. The 26s cigar was one of his most original automobiles.

About vehicle
Cigar-shaped ragout nicknamed for its long, narrow shape, the 26s was put together from pieces of other gordini cars. The type l6s tubular chassis included fully independent suspension. The early type 20 transmission was later replaced by the heavier-duty type 24. The cars six-cylinder engine was the two-litre type 20 or the 2.5-litre type 23. The driver sat in the middle of the car, but there was room for a passenger on his left. three-year racing career in its debut, the 26s finished sixth in the 1953 le mans 24-hour endurance race. It was third in the nine-day 1953 tour de france. After taking part in the african portion of the paris-dakar race the following winter, the 26s was damaged, along with other gordini cars, in a shipboard accident. it appeared in the portuguese grand prix of 1954, then did not race again until 1956. In its last race, the 26s placed second at montlhery in the usa cup.
The cigar-shaped gordini 26s racing car now resides in a mulbouse, france, museum.
