| | About vehicle No gearbox
the problem that occupied early automakers was to vary the ratio of engine speed to torque (twisting force) without stripping the gears. In the fouillaron system, power was transmitted by belts running over variable-groove expandable pulleys to a countershaft. The driver did not have to settle on any particular gear ratio. This system was not repeated in a production automobile until 1959, when the dutch-built daf introduced its 600 with variomatic transmission. The more-recent fiat selecta and ford ctx transmissions are similar.
numerous models
fouillaron built one-, two-, three- and four-cylinder models with engine displacement ranging between 1.0 and 3.7 litres and hp between 4 and 25. In 1914 the company also offered a 6-cylinder, 2.8-litre model. Other than
the transmission, the cars were conventional in appearance and mechanics. The engines came from other manufacturers, especially de dion-bouton This 1906-07 one-cylinder lohp model has a feature that was unique to fouillaron in its day: An infinitely-variable transmission. |
