The squarebird
offered for the first time as a hardtop as well as a convertible, the all-new 1958 squarebird so called for its flat, square roofline was a full two feet longer than the 1957 model and 800 lbs. Heavier. Unitary body-frame construction allowed reduction of ground clearance to only six inches. This required a high transmission tunnel over which was laid a central console, separating the interior into four bucket seats a layout copied by other automakers. Welding of the sheet metal made t-birds so strong they later became demolition-derby favorites.
