The big block
though the gt 40 competed at le mans in 1964-65 without finishing, it showed great potential. An initial batch of 50 cars was built to qualify for the production class. The 1965 gt 40s had 4.7-litre fairlane engines. Under the control of a team fielded by carroll shelby, the ford racing program developed a new 7.0-litre mark ii gt.
