| | About vehicle A tight squeeze
intermediate fords couldnt match gm and chrysler models in muscle-car competition until a dearborn contract-car builder found a way to slip the massive 427 engine into this fairlane body. The task involved running pipes through the components of the revised front suspension in order to install the engines exhaust headers. A hood bubble was needed to accommodate the protruding intake manifold, which bore twin holley four-barrel carburetors. To make the result light enough for racing, many body parts were reconstructed of fiberglass or aluminum hot hot rodder
once the thunderbolt roared into action, the results were awesome. Butch leal won the national hot rod association nationals ss at indianapolis by doing a quarter mile in 11.76 seconds, for an average speed of 122.78 mph.
gus ronda betterd that mark at the nhra winternationals, smoking the quarter in 11.6 seconds (124.38 mph). Only the hood bubble on this 1964 fairlane sedan gave any indication of what lurked below: Hot-rod power sufficient to propel the vehicle to drag-racing stardom |
