For its 1970 formula one program, ferrari introduced a new 312b car equipped with a flat 12-cylinder engine originally intended for an airplane. After a slow start, the 312b finished the season as the best-performing racing car in fl competition.

Low to the ground ferrari chief engineer mario forghieris new three-litre engine had so many advantages over the prior 312 vi2 that it remained in service for a decade. The layout of horizontally opposed cylinders reduced bulk and weight, allowing a lower center of gravity and improved balance for the 312b aluminum-paneled monocoque. Five cars were built. rousing finale after a belated introduction and several breakdowns, the 312b won four of the last five 1970 races. First jackie ickx won the austrian grand prix, with clay regazzoni second. Regazzoni then won the italian gp after lotus 72 driver jochen rindt, who had dominated earlier competition, was killed in practice. Ickx and regazzoni were first and second, respectively, in the canadian and mexican events. For much of 1971 ferrari continued to rely on this car while developing the new 312b2, but its only fl championship victoiy came in the south african gp, with mario andretti driving
