darracq started out in 1891 by making bicycles. In 1897 he built a new factory that produced motorcycles and three- and four-wheeled automobiles called perfectas. The first car under the darracq name was a single-cylinder 6 12 hp; By 1900, 60 had been sold. Other cheap one-, two- and four-cylinder models followed. The marque also had an impressive racing program. Victories in the 1905-06 vanderbilt cup races on long island created an american market for the top-level models.

an english group bought the company in 1903, but retained darracq as managing director. By 1906 the darracq line, ranging from a single-cylinder 79 hp to a six-cylinder 3040, rivaled
delaunay-belleville and renault in scope. The 1618 hp of 1907 cost more to produce than its sales price, which was however too high for most prospective customers. Darracq resigned his position in 1912. A four-cylinder model in the high-middle range of the darracq lineup, this 1618 hp cost more to produce than its sales price. |
